It All Begins with a Good Foundation

29 Apr

No, not life. Your face!

Without a good foundation, it doesn’t matter how stunning your eye shadow is, how perfect your blush looks, or what lip colour you have on. A good base is where it all must begin!

I have spent countless hours researching the best of the best, testing them all at Sephora, and buying, trying, and exchanging (thank you Sephora for your amazing return policy – you totally understand half the battle!). Based on my extensive and ever SO important research, I present to you my findings!

And the awards for best liquid foundations go to….drum roll please….

Best Overall Foundation: Makeup Forever HD Liquid Foundation

I love this foundation for so many reasons. First, it is a favourite with makeup artists in the TV and broadcast industry for a reason. It is a foundation that covers imperfections even with HD cameras! I realize that is not important for us normal folk who don’t find an HD camera in our faces everyday, so what makes this my favourite is it’s natural look and feel. You don’t need too much of this – 1 pump will do your whole face in medium coverage – but it is buildable and does not look “cakey”. My #1 reason to love this foundation though – it’s large array of colours! With over 26 colours to choose from, you are sure to find a match. The downside to this foundation is lack of SPF. If you choose Makeup Forever HD, mix SPF and moisturizer into the foundation every morning, or be sure to use an SPF on your face before you apply your makeup.

Runner-Up: Nars Sheer Glow Foundation

Again, a really good foundation suitable for normal to dry skin. This foundation is named “Sheer Glow” as it is supposed to give you a luminous, radiant look. My first concern when I usually see “glow” beside “makeup” is I will look oily. With this foundation I didn’t. It really just gave an un-matte look, but still very natural. I highly recommend this foundation if you have skin on the drier side! The one downside to this product – it does not have a pump…womp womp.

Best Foundation with SPF: Diorskin Forever Flawless Perfection Wear Makeup SPF25

This is a natural looking, buildable foundation with some upsides and downsides. One major upside is it’s inclusion of titanium dioxide, which means broad-spectrum sun protection. The downside is the scent. If fragrants irritate your skin, you will want to stay away from this product. Irritation is known to break down your skin’s collagen production, which means you won’t be getting any anti-ageing benefits, that’s for sure!

Best Light-Coverage Foundation: Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup

I found this makeup to be the lightest feeling on my skin, but also the lightest coverage. That may be perfect for some people who are blessed with gorgeous skin, but it won’t cover any redness if you have it. This foundation lasted all day, and is fragrance-free. Another reason I loved this foundation is that it is formulated without parabens, sulfates, and phthalates; all of which are linked to cancer.

Well, there you have it! My first beauty awards dedicated to liquid gold foundation.

What are YOUR favourite foundations? What do you look for in a good foundation? I want to know your thoughts!
