Spring Trends Have Sprung

10 Mar

Spring has sprung…almost. But regardless, a little sprucing up of the spring wardrobe won’t hurt! There is nothing like flowy material, prints, and short-sleeves to get you over the winter blahs!

Here is a list of this year’s spring trends to keep you fashionistas on top of your throne:

The Slip Dress

Lingerie-as-day-wear is making a comeback. Expect to find silky dresses and lace detail in stores this spring.

Bright Eyeshadow

Specifically aqua-blue. Why? No one knows except Diane Von Furstenburg. Blue may not be something in your bag of tricks, but why not branch out from the usual neutral pallet and try a shimmery peach or purple?

Prints Galore

Floral prints are always the rage come spring, but this year it is also all about picnic print. Yes, think about a picnic tablecloth print. You got it.

Cold Shoulders

Off-the shoulder is the it-factor this year. Halter0-style dresses or straight across shirts will be filling racks soon.

The Backpack

Every travelling mom will be happy. The backpack is making a comeback, but don’t go heading to your nearest school-supplies shop. Expect to see backpacks in stores with higher end retailers this year.

Suede dresses, suede shirts, suede shoes, suede shorts. It will be easy to find whatever suede your little heart desires.

The Slipper Shoe

Alas, a slipper that can be worn out of the house! Slip-on style flat shoes will soon be seen on the feet of every fashion-forward (and lazy?) fashionista come May.

Pleats, Please

Pleated skirts were in last year, but now it is about pleats everywhere, of all shapes, sizes, and colours.

So there you have it fashion bunnies…who is ready for the warm weather?

A How-To: Stay on Trend this Fall

9 Nov

There are many reasons to love fall. The colours, the perfect weather, Thanksgiving….and the fashion. Fall is my favourite time of year but mostly because it means the year’s latest fashion trends hit shelves. Here is all you need to know to stay in the-know this fall:

Blanket Scarves

Scarves are always on-trend, but big blankety-type scarves are the latest. With 101 ways to wrap, wear, and tie these babies up, you will have no problem staying warm this fall. Opt for a plaid or printed scarf over a solid or colour-blocked one.

velvet top velvet

I’ve got to say I am not a fan. Never have been and never will be. But if you have always been a closet-velvet lover you’re in luck. Crack your secret stash out and wear with pride this holiday season. Tip: Aritzia has been spewing velvet lately in case you’re in need.

Over-the-Knee Boots

Screw below the knee. Over-the-knee is better.

I’ve always been a plaid lover (see the proof here and here), but it seems the rest of the non-country world has been embracing it lately. A plaid shirt goes with anything, but pair with jeans, leopard print flats, and a leather jacket for a casual night out.

It never goes out of style, but this year you can find just about anything in leather. Skirts, tops, dresses, jackets, pants, gloves – just don’t wear all at once.

cutout cutout2

Looking for that perfect holiday dress? Chances are you will come across a few with cut-outs. Designers have opted for a little more skin this year in the form of fashionably-cute and strategically placed holes.

nails plum-lipstick-ideas-3

I could not be happier that maroon is “in” again this year. Whether it’s lips, nails, or tees, you can do no wrong.

Long Vests and Fur Vests

fur vesty

The perfect throw-on for a fall day. Pair either with your over-the-knee boots and a turtleneck for a comfy day out.

hat 2 hat

You’ve seen these on just about every girl in line at Starbucks. If you look good in hats or tend to have bad hair days, say no more.

poncho poncho-trend-fall-2014-2015-3

No – I’m not talking about a rainy day plastic yellow poncho. I’m talking about the sweater kind. Another throw-on that just works this year. Pair with your great new hat and jeans for that comfy yet stylish look!

So there you have it. Happy Monday Fashionistas!

10 Christmas List Essentials for 2014

10 Nov

I’m back, y’all. It’s been a month (holy sh*t!) since my last post, but don’t fret. I am still alive, breathing, and definitely, most definitely have not been starving.

And I’m back with one of my favourite posts of the year….Christmas list essentials! I start making my Christmas list pretty late…you know, early August. And it probably changes 47393 times before Dec. 25th. But I can guarantee you these 10 essentials are going no where.

10. Fitbit

Counts calories? Check. Counts steps? Check. Tracks sleep? Check. Anything to help me live healthier, happier, and continently! But for real….everyone I know who has one raves about it.

9. Party Skirt

You saw my post here, so you know I am dying for a party skirt. Too bad Christmas day doesn’t come BEFORE all the Christmas parties where you struggle to find something to wear….

8. Michael Kors Watch

Classic – and I shockingly don’t own one (insert GASPS of horror here). A great watch is a staple in any accessories closet, and Michael is the king of great watches. Now I just have to decide between gold or rose gold…thoughts?

7. Rebecca Minkoff Purse

img-thing (2)

Repeat after me….can you own too many purses? NO! Do we love Rebecca Minkoff? YES!

I am a huge fan of the mini mac. It’s the perfect purse for a night out or just a trip to the mall. The 5-zip is cute too, and it acts as a clutch without the strap.

6. Wine Glasses

download (1)

I seriously have problems with not breaking wine glasses. Actually, my dishwasher has a problem with not breaking wine glasses. Together, we are the worst at not breaking wine glasses. You can never have too many…

5. Quote-Worthy Coffee Mugs

There is nothing better than starting your morning with a cute and clever cup of joe! These two above are from Indigo Chapters, in case you were wondering (hint hint Mom).

4. Coffee Table Books

Everyone has a coffee table and therefore everyone needs a coffee table book. I will take any of the above please 🙂

3. Hat

Wide-brimmed hats exploded onto the fashion scene this year. I think everyone and their great-aunt’s sister’s cousin’s neighbour has one. You can find different styles and sizes, but my personal favourite is the trusty one above from Marciano.

2. Kobo E-Reader

My Kobo is my Mom’s that I have stolen. And I love it and will only give it back once she buys me a new one (that’s not the bratty spoiled child in me, I swear). I fit my Mom’s mine in my purse and always have it on hand when I have a few minutes to kill. So much more convenient than hauling around a heavy book!

1. Wall Map or Globe with Push Pins

images (2)

images (3)

One of my globe-trotting friends has a wall map above her bed and has marked off all the places she has travelled with push pins. Such a good idea! A daily reminder of all the places you have yet to experience and a little motivation when you want to buy those shoes but also want to go to Thailand…oh, the cruel decisions.

Hopefully that gives you some holiday inspo, whether for yourself or others! If you want to check out last year’s version, click hereFa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la!

Step Up Your Vest Game

5 Oct

A stylish vest + boots = fall (most stylish season and therefore the best)

My kind of math, people.

I love fall for many reasons, but mostly for vests. Vests just make an outfit. They add that somethin-somethin that your outfit was no doubt missing.

Like people, vests come in various shapes and sizes.

The Fur Vest

Pair with a chunky knit or a plaid shirt (my personal fave), or dress up a simple tee or sweatshirt. You can find a classic vegan fur vest in most stores in the fall season.

The Herringbone Vest

A J-Crew classic. The herringbone vest goes with literally anything, and truly stylizes a simple outfit. Pair this vest with a contrasting pattern (think leopard print, plaid or stripes) for a higher fashion look, or dress up a silk blouse, sweater, or cotton shirt.

The Leather or Suede Vest

The leather or suede vest is one of my personal favourites. You can rock this year-round with a dress, skirt, or with jeans and a tee. My fave dinner date look for fall? A bandage skirt and oversize tee with the suede vest. Va-va-voom.

The Jacket Vest

Usually oversize, the jacket vest unfortunately looks best on tall people (sorry for those under 5’5″)…

I love this look for work, or just to dress up pumps and distressed denim. If you gravitate toward a more casual look, try a military or cargo vest!

The Puffy Vest

You all know the classic puffy vest. I think every kid in grade school had one. Well, guess what. They will always be in style. Perfect for a fall walk, a trip to the pumpkin patch, or a weekend around the fire. Like with most other vests, stripes or plaid works best underneath in my opinion, especially if your puffy vest is PINK.

North Face makes great puffy vests (and warm too, not just stylish), or try J-Crew.

Tips for Accessorizing Your Vest Game

1. Jewelry – bold necklaces! I love a big bright sparkly necklace with a plaid shirt.

2. Boots, boots, boots! Whether you are rockin’ booties or tall boots, boots will no doubt step up your vest game.

3. Headwear – think a knit headband or a wide brim floopy hat.

4. Scarf – add a contrasting patterned scarf to your outfit, or just a simple chunky knit scarf – especially if it’s a little chilly out!

5. Wear leather tights. End of story.

Favourite Thing Friday #21: Party Skirts!

3 Oct

Have you heard of this new phenomenon called Party Skirts? Started by two brilliant sisters from Skot Apparel in none other than Vancouver (basically where all Canadian fashion seems to start!), the Party Skirt industry has taken off. And for good reason!

These skirts are perfect for basically any occasion – dressed up for a wedding, dressed down with a casual top and flats, for a dinner date, a night on the town, or basically just whenever you want to feel like a princess 🙂

They kind of remind of Carrie Bradshaw a la Sex and the City! Always ahead of the curve, that girl.

What I absolutely LOVE about these skirts other than the look is how easy they are to mix and match and use bright colours. They come in an array of fun patterns and bold colours – you can check them all out here.

And if you don’t believe me, fashionista Emily Maynard rocked a party skirt to a wedding in the summer….so clearly they are “in”.

ChicagoWeddingWant your own party skirt? You can purchase online at Skot Apparel or Shop Bop, or check out your local Holt Renfrew. Happy shopping 🙂

Fashion on the Move!

2 Oct

I thought food trucks were all the rage, but now it’s about fashion trucks. They are popping up in major cities EVERYWHERE! Such a cool concept – I love it.

Unless you are in the middle of Timbucktoo, your closest major city likely has one of these mobile gems. Haven’t heard of one? Try clicking here to find out! Yes, there is even a site dedicated to helping you find your local fashion truck. Isn’t life grand?

If you are like me and live in T dot O dot, you may know we are lucky to have Fashiontruck Canada.

Two fashionistas dreamed up the Fashiontruck Canada in Toronto in March 2014, and it has since taken off. You can find these girls around T.O. on a weekly basis, usually in the downtown core. Don’t live downtown? No prob – they travel to festivals, and even Muskoka, in the summer. Find them online here or follow them on Instagram @fashiontruckcanada to find out where they are parked each day!

And don’t forget…Sweet Child in the City is now on Instagram!

Favourite Thing Friday #20: Online Shopping

15 Aug

This is usually what I look like when online shopping….and that is just fine with me!

images (4)

When online shopping became a thing, my bank account didn’t.

I have a few go-to sites that I love for finding pieces I generally can’t at my usual stops at the mall – Aritizia, J. Crew, Zara, Marciano…the list goes on.

I don’t buy pants online. I am one of those people who MUST try on pants before buying as they never fit the same. However, when it comes to tops and dresses, I am usually the same size across the board. This unfortunately/fortunately makes online shopping a cinch.

Here are some of my go-to sites to browse when I am a) bored, b) sad, c) looking for something specific, d) have an occasion, and e) don’t have an occasion but feel compelled to spend money I don’t have.

1. Mura Boutique

Australians seriously have all the best shops and clothes. And why do they have to be oh so far?? Thankfully Mura ships worldwide, and the shipping costs really aren’t that much ($10-$20 max)! If you are looking for a special occasion dress, Mura is a no-brainer. Here is one of my favourite pieces – and for under $60 CDN.

2. E’s Closet

I wish I grabbed this URL first! I find their clothes are sometimes hit or miss, but when they have something I like, it is seriously love at first sight. E’s Closet is US based, and is one of Emily Maynard’s go-to shops (I love her…a lot). Both her coat and dress are from last season at E’s Closet below.

3. Nordstrom

Like DUH. And I do realize they are an actual STORE not just an online shop, but they do not have stores up here (yet…come on 2015!) and do ship to Canada. So, as such, Nordstrom obviously makes the list. Whatever it is you are looking for, there is a 99.9% chance Nordstrom has it. And another 99.9% chance it is on sale. Win/win!

Free shipping to Canada anyone? How often do we hear that? How about never. With brands from Alice + Olivia and Rebecca Minkoff to Free People and LNA, SHOPBOP has it all. Just don’t go “shopping” here unless you have some cash to spend…

My fave t-shirt ever, from SHOPBOP.

 5. Asos

Another gem at the click of your fingers. Asos has it all, but at a discount. If you aren’t worried about brand names and just want a cute outfit at a great price (but really…who doesn’t?!), then Asos is your stop. Check out this skirt I got from Asos below – I wear it all.the.time. PS…they also ship free to Canada on order over $35.

6. Love Storey Boutique

Another trendy online shop from down under! I love this store for eye catching fashion, their use of lace, and just all around different sort of clothes you generally find here. See what I mean?

And I love this top, especially with a gold belt.

Do you online shop? What are some of your favourite online stores? Let me know in the comments!

Favourite Thing Friday #14: White Jeans

30 May

I love all white errrrrrything in the summa summa time.

It’s night and day how many loads of whites I do in the summer compared to the winter. In summer I have to split my whites into two loads. In winter the whites just get added…well, wherever they can.

And I don’t care who you are, you can always wear white before May Long and after Labour Day – if the weather is right.

White jeans are a staple in my wardrobe May through September. I reach for them without thinking. If you don’t have a good pair of go-to white jeans in your life, you need to stop reading and head to the mall. They will change your life forever, I promise!

Can be casual.

DIY: Cut-Off Shorts

21 May

If you are like me, you have 782902 pairs of jeans in your closet, and about 75% of them you will likely never wear again. If that is the case, it is time to do something with them! You can either take  a few pairs to your local Goodwill or Value Village, or you can turn those old jeans into new shorts!

The best jeans to turn into cut-offs are ones that have little to no spandex (think boyfriend style or light-wash).

Here is my 5-step process to cut-off shorts:

Step 1:

Wash your jeans and throw them in the drier. You want them pre-shrunk.

Step 2:

Put the jeans on, and mark with chalk or a safety pin where you want the cut-off to be. You have options – you can make crops (cut half way up your calf), bermuda shorts (cut just above your knee), or cut-offs (anywhere along the upper half of your thigh) – which is my personal preference.

Step 3:

Take the jeans off, and use sheers to cut the fabric straight across where you marked with the chalk or safety pin. Tip: it is always better to cut at least an inch lower than you were planning to. You can always make them shorter, but you can’t take back what you already cut! Use a ruler or tape measure to get a straight line.

Step 4:

When making cut-offs, I like to take my sheers and trim the outsides so it is a little bit higher along the sides of my thighs than on the inside.

Step 5:

Wash and dry the shorts to get the frayed look. You can then either leave them as is, or sew above the fray to prevent them from fraying anymore.

Voila!  Easy peasy.
