Lipsticks for Winter

24 Nov

I am a lipstick addict. There I said it. My name is Sweet Child in the City and I am addicted to buying lipsticks. Help me, I’m poor.

I don’t leave the house without something on my lips. Like ever. (OK, maybe on a Sunday morning when I go to get an XL coffee and I had one too many glasses of wine the night before…maybe only then).

I thought I’d round up my faves so that YOU don’t have to go and buy the whole MAC store to find out the best ones. So kind of me ūüôā

Here you go:

MAC Rebel

This is a new favourite of mine. It’s a plum based matte lipstick that pretty much goes with anything in the winter. Don’t be afraid of the purple tint – it’s really quite pretty and not as dark as it looks. I use a liner called Boiseberry from Annabelle to make the look a little lighter, but you can also use MAC’s liner in Currant to get a stronger look.

MAC Speed Dial

This is my go-to everyday lipstick for work. It’s the perfect pink for your pout¬†in the winter season. It works especially well on blondes, and brings out green or blue eyes (if I do say so myself). I typically use a sheer gloss overtop, or layer with MAC’s Pure Silliness gloss for an added shot of pink.

YSL Volupte Sheer Candy in #3 Pomegranate

This is my trusty old favourite. I wish it wasn’t quite so sheer, but the colour is so beautiful that I just know I have to reapply more often. If you don’t love bold matte looks, this is the lipstick for you. It looks quite bright in the tube, but it goes on very sheer.¬†I bought this for my Mom last Christmas and she loves it. It’s great for any occasion – work, holiday party, girls night out, and could¬†really work¬†with absolutely everything. It’s a bit of a higher price point, but seriously worth it in my opinion.

MAC Red (or Maybelline Red Revolution)

I only wear red lipstick in the winter. And if I’m going to wear red, I go big or go home with MAC’s classic Red. It’s not too deep or too orange, and has a hint of a pink undertone which personally works well with my skin tone. I always wear a liner with red lipstick, and for this one recommend MAC’s liner in Cherry. If you want an identical lipstick from the drugstore, try Maybelline’s Red Revolution.

And there you have it…your lips are ready for winter!

Favourite Thing Friday: Milan Mode

5 Feb

My name is Erika and I am a lipstick addict.

There. I said it. If I sold my lipstick collection I’d be a millionaire. But you know what they say¬† – a girl can’t have too many lipsticks! (at least that is what I say).

A love them all, but y’all I found a new great one. It’s Milan Mode by MAC. It’s the perfect combo of plum and pink, with a little sparkle to boot! The cool hues in it go great with a fall and winter wardrobe.

Check it out:

You’re welcome!

Perfect Red Lips: A How-To

31 Mar

Red lips can be a tough look to pull off for some people. They are bold, sexy, and classic but have to be executed perfectly or else disaster can strike.

Here is my guide to pulling off the perfect red pout.

Choosing the Right Red

Red lipsticks aren’t all the same. There are so many different shades of red out there! Here is how to choose the best red for your skin shade (stolen from Lauren Conrad…thanks LC!).

I personally love MAC lipsticks, and find they make the best shades of red. Here are some of their most popular rouges:

MAC Lipstick in Russian Red – Intense red with blue undertones

MAC Lipstick in Relentlessly Red – Bright pinkish coral red

MAC Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Perpetual Flame – Pink cranberry red

MAC Mineralize Rich lipstick in Everyday Diva – red cream

Remember, one red lipstick can look very different on person to another, depending on their existing lip colour and skin tone!

1. Prime, prime, prime! Remember my post about the power of primer? Well it cannot apply enough here, ladies! Prime those lips first and foremost to even out the shade and ensure your attention-grabbing red lipstick stays and doesn’t stray! No chapped lips here please. My favourite¬†anti-dote is Guerlain’s Kiss Kiss Liplift.

2. Walk the line! Lip liner is so important with red lips. Red lipsticks tend to bleed, meaning once you have applied the outer edges of your application will expand. Liner holds the lip colour in and ensures a smooth line all around. You can also use it to accentuate the bow of your lips or to make your lips appear larger. To apply liner, first make sure your liner is sharp. Then trace around the outer edges of your lips with short strokes. Once you have outlined your lips, use the lip liner to colour in your lips. (Yes, all that practice staying within the lines of your colouring books as a child is paying off!). Doing this acts as a base for your lip colour and ensures your red lips will pop all night long..

Make sure when you are choosing a red liner that it is within the same red-colour-family as your lipstick. Don’t go choosing a lip liner with orange undertones and then choose a lipstick with red-plum undertones. Best advice? Ask a makeup artist or beauty consultant on-site when purchasing to help you out!

3. The most important step of all – apply that lipstick! Fill in your lips with your fave red stick, paying extra special attention around the corners and the bow. If God-forbid you colour a little outside the lines (Sex & the City reference anyone? hehe), quickly get a q-tip with makeup remover and dab it off. You may have to then touch up your foundation and lip liner. I find that applying red lisptick with a lip brush works best for accuracy and finish!

4. Smudge-free. If you feel the need, you can always try some fancy techniques. There is blotting your lips on a tissue to get any excess off that may cause smudging, or putting your thumb between your lips and pressing down to make sure you will not get any of that red on your pretty white chicklets. Finally, you can dab loose transparent powder on your lips and reapply the lipstick for a more matte look. Or you can apply gloss to shine on all night! to each their own.

P.S…Lip stains are a great option if you want colour without the mess!

P.P.S…use your Touche √Čclat or another highlighter and dab where your cupid’s bow meets your lips. This will give your lips a fuller look…you’re welcome!

Now you and your red lips are ready to conquer the world!

Get the Glow

20 Mar

There’s matte and there’s shiny. And then there is a glow.

Radiant. Illuminating. Healthy. Everyone loves a good glow.

Here are my favourite highlighting products to give you a glow:

1. Sun Beam by Benefit

This is like sunshine in a bottle. Applied properly (do not use the nail polish style brush it comes with!) it will give you a natural sunkissed glow. Just dab a bit on your cheekbones and brow bone and you should be good to go all day.

2. Shimmering Skin Perfector by Becca in Opal

Sephora simply cannot keep this product in stock. It’s the perfect amount of shimmer for a night out in a gorgeous pearly bronze colour. If I had to choose, this is my favourite.

3. Mac Mineralize Skinfinish in Lights Capade

I’m not a huge MAC girl, but I do love this product. For you MAC lovers out there, this is a must-have. It is so easy to apply – it really is idiot-proof. A little swipe along the tops of your cheekbones and under your eyebrows and you are looking radiant as can be!

4. Make Up Forever Uplight Face Luminating Gel

The great thing about this little gem is it can be added to your foundation for an all over glow. It can also be used to highlight cheekbones and brow bones. I love #22 Pearly Pink Flesh for the winter and #12 Dewy Golden Beige for summer time.

5. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder

You already know I love this from my blog post here. The great thing about this line of powders is they can double as a soft bronzer or blush. They are also formulated without parabens – bonus!

Don’t say I didn’t warn you though – no one wants to look they are covered in oil or swallowed Tinkerbell. A little goes a long way, ladies!

3-Minute Face

30 Jan

I don’t know if what I wear on a daily basis is more or less than the norm, but I thought clocking in at under 3 minutes is pretty darn respectable. When it comes to rolling out of bed for work every morning, I am not exactly in the mood to care too much about makeup (no, the caring happens when you bump into your ex in the food court at lunch. Gulp). I have my routine and everyday essentials, and I just work with that. Trying to change it up at an unGodly hour could be social-suicide.

Here is my 8-step everyday makeup routine, that I have perfected in under 3-minutes:

1. Base

I use Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. It is not as heavy as a foundation that I would wear if going out at night, but still provides a nice light finish. I use an SPF under my makeup as part of my daily skincare routine, but this product also has SPF20.  I use Nude in the winter and Bisque or Sand in the summer.

2. Concealer

I’ve blogged about my favourite concealer before. Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer¬†in Vanilla is my savoir. Hallelujah!

3. Bronzer

Benefit Cosmetics Hoola. It just seems to be the one bronzer that works any time of the year on most skin types. Just don’t use the brush it comes with…use a large powder brush to sweep across cheeks, chin, and forehead.

4. Eyeshadow Base

Anytime I wear eyeshadow I use a base. Why? Because if you don’t you may as well not wear eyeshadow! Without it my eyeshadow sticks for about 45 seconds. As blogged before, I like MAC Prep & Prime Eye.

5. Eyeshadow

My everyday shade is usually All That Glitters by MAC. It is a soft shimmering gold colour and just seems to always work with whatever clothes I put on. If I’m not wearing it, I can most likely be caught in Sellout by Urban Decay, a pinky champagne colour that blends in nicely.

6. Mascara

My absolute beauty must. Mascara saves me from looking like the eyelash monster got me the night before. All hail mascara!!! If you have seen my post here, then you know how I feel about mascara. My go-to everyday is either Clinique High Impact Mascara in black or Benefit Bad Gal Lash in black.

7. Eyebrow pencil

I have light blonde eyebrows, and would do almost anything for the Brooke Shields look circa early ’90’s. But we can’t have it all, so I settle for a darn good eyebrow pencil instead. I’m not a fan of the gels, markers, etc. Just a plain old pencil helps me fill in my brows naturally. I use MAC Eyebrow Pencil in Fling.

8. Lips

Last but not least. My favourite part. The lips just pull everything together! My everyday look is pretty simple so I can pull off a light lip or a bold lip easily. I use a lot of YSL, MAC, and Bobbi Brown on my lips. I will be doing a post on my favourite go-to colours soon. So stay tuned!

So that is my quick and easy 8-step routine. Should you care to walk a fine line with time, you can add these two optional steps.

1. Curl your lashes! Just adds a little extra oomph. I like the Shiseido Eyelash Curler. It does the trick!

2. Liner! Some girls line everyday, some don’t. For me it is an extra – big meeting, going out after work, etc. – calls for liner. I find black is too stark on me so I use brown or plum. My favourite is MAC Eye Kohl in Prunella. It’s a pencil…I leave liquid liner to the pro’s!

Well folks, there you have it! What are your everyday essentials? Do you take over 3-minutes?

Power of Primer

26 Dec

If you add one thing to your makeup routine, let it be primer. If you don’t already use a primer on your face, eyes, or lips you are missing out! Here are 5 reasons you should use primer since…like yesterday:

1. It makes your skin a smooth canvas for your foundation or powders. No makeup will look good on anyone if it goes on over dry flaky skin. A good primer will also absorb oil and minimize any unwanted shine.

2. It helps your makeup last all day long. Without primer, your eyeshadow will crease in your eyelids by noon, your foundation will fade, and your lip stick will be long gone onto your morning coffee cup. Primer acts as a base for your makeup to better adhere to.

3. It can make your makeup more luminous. You can get face primers with a slight radiance to them which will make your foundation and face have a subtle glow. If your skin has some redness, you can get face primers with a green tinge which cancels out any redness.

4. Primers, especially on eyes and lips will cancel out uneven skin tones and create an even base for your makeup. This ensures your eye and lip colours go on evenly and “pop”.

5. Good primers will have antioxidants and other healthy skin benefits, and some even include sunscreen.

I blogged about my fave face primer awhile back. Laura Mercier makes a wonderful one called Radiance Primer.¬†It is very lightweight and has a silky consistency. It has a tinge of colour to it and really does help improve the look of your foundation or tinted moisturizer. The “radiance” part of adds some luminance to your foundation when applied on top.

Another great primer is Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15. What sets this primer out is that you can wear it on its own to reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores. It is colourless, fragrance-free,  and very fluid. Veil Mineral Primer is formulated with naturally derived titanium dioxide and zinc oxide instead of chemical sun-blocking agents, which provides gentle broad-spectrum sun protection.

My lips get extremely dry in the winter months, but thankfully Guerlain makes an antidote! Their Kiss Kiss Liplift is amazing. It¬†feels very soft¬†and¬†minimizes any dryness or peeling on your lips so your lipstick or gloss goes on even and smooth. A nude colour, it also neutralizes your lip colour so your lipstick colour “pops”! Guerlain claims it will plump your lips with expandable microbeads- but take that with a grain of salt.

Behold the power of eye primer! No more creasing. No more reapplying.

Eye primer not only evens out your eyelid colouring, but ensures your eyeshadow and liner stay in place all day. Eyeshadow tends to fade and gather in the crease of your eye without a good primer. My favourites are MAC Prep + Prime Eye and Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube РOriginal. Both are great options with good reviews. The main thing with eye primer Рyou want one that is fragrance-free or else it could irritate the thin skin on your eyes.
